Betsey Norland, PhD

Shamanic Practitioner
Reiki Master

I have always loved being close to nature. Whether I’m working in my garden, walking along a woodland trail, or sitting at the edge of living waters, if I’m paying attention to my surroundings, I always receive the inspiration and emotional uplift to help me through whatever challenge I am facing.  When I discovered shamanism, I was thrilled to find a worldview that explained why nature is such a reliable source of healing:  Every aspect of Creation – animal, vegetable and mineral as well as human – has a spiritual element, and acknowledgment of this spiritual connection brings balance and harmony to every human experience.

My grandmother felt a deep connection with the natural world.  When I was small, she often suggested what she called a “tramp” through the woods in search of fairies and gnomes.  We never saw any that I can recall.  At least we never found any tiny beings that resembled the ones illustrated in the books she read to me.  We did, however, feel the living energy of the woods themselves.  In those walks I learned to appreciate the profound effect that conscious connection to nature can have on the human spirit.  Although it would be many years before I understood this, those early walks with the nature spirits were the first steps along my journey into shamanism.

I learned more than an appreciation of nature from my grandmother.  She also introduced me to the concept of spiritual healing.  She taught me that all human ills begin with a misunderstanding of our true nature as spiritual beings, and that reconnecting with Spirit restores the body to its natural state of good health.  Thanks to her influence, I have practiced various forms of spiritual healing for most of my life.  My training as a Shamanic Practitioner and a Reiki Master has deepened my appreciation of the connection of all life forms.
